Description

Assists the professional staff with the delivery of services to patients in a variety of settings.

Provides direct patient care, and/or one to one observation to selected patients under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Assists, escorts and transports patients.

Responsibilities

A. Clinical/Technical/Service

1.Assists the professional staff with the delivery of services to patients in the ED setting

2.Provides direct patient care, and/or one to one constant or safety observation to selected patients under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse

3.Assists, escorts and transports patients as needed

4.Performs and assists with designated procedures, using aseptic technique as indicated

5.Assists with patients examinations, and performs vital signs as ordered.

6.Obtains and provides nourishment for patients

7.Provides minor treatments as directed - dressings, application of ace bandages, applications of slings and ice, pediculosis

8.Assists with application of casts and splints

9.Prepares, adjusts and teaches the use of crutches and canes as outlined by the RN/PT.

10.Is cognizant of the need for safety devices; applies or assists with application

11.Collects specimens, performs venipuncture and fingersticks for blood glucose

12.Obtains EKGs as ordered

13.Assists the healthcare team during medical sepsis and stroke codes

14.Assists patients to get needed services by communicating those needs to the nurse

15.Communicates information to patients, families and visitors

16.Provides post-mortem care

17.Sets-up, stocks, and maintains examining rooms

18.Performs eye irrigations

19.Maintains BCLS certification as required by EMS standards

20.Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area

a.Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group

b.Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment

c.Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs

B. Organizational/Managerial

21.Participates in the Departments of Nursing and Emergency Services Quality Improvement Program/activities

22.Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information

C. Educational/Professional Development

23.Participates in the development of other staff members

24.Meets all regulatory and annual health assessment requirements

D. Communication/Relationships

25.Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others

26.Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community

27.Adheres to Mount Sinai Health Systems legal and ethical standards

28.May be required to perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree desirable.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Certificate program from an approved school or 2 years of prior experience
  • Heartsaver Certification required from American Heart Association

Compensation

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $26.2144 - $28.455 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
